How Do You Choose an HVAC Contractor in Fresno?

Check the license, compare three written bids, and read the contract before you sign. California's contractor licensing board lays out the steps.

How to Choose an HVAC Contractor in Fresno

Start by checking the contractor's California license on the state licensing board's website. Then get at least three written bids for the same work, ask for proof of insurance, and read the whole contract before you pay anything. Those steps come from the Contractors State License Board, known as CSLB.

The state publishes a short checklist. Work through it in order before you sign.

We follow the same list in this guide. Where a rule comes from CSLB, we say so.

Three Things to Do First

Do these before you let anyone start work or take a deposit.

Check the license

Every contractor ad in California must show a state license number. Look it up on the CSLB website to see whether it is active and what work it covers. For heating and air conditioning, look for C-20. Our step-by-step license guide walks you through it.

Get written bids

CSLB recommends at least three written bids on identical plans, specifications, and scope of work. Be wary of a bid far below the others, since a low bidder may cut corners to make a profit.

Read the contract

A contract should detail the work, the price, when payments will be made, who gets the necessary building permits, and when the job will be finished. It should also give the contractor's address and license number.

Questions to Ask an HVAC Company Before You Sign

  1. Can I see your license and a photo ID? Ask to see the contractor's pocket license and a photo ID when they come to bid.
  2. Can I see a certificate of insurance? CSLB says to ask for a copy, or for the name of the insurance carrier and agency so you can verify it.
  3. Is this a repair or a replacement, and why? Ask whether the system you have can be repaired before anyone quotes a new one.
  4. How will the new system be sized? A proper size comes from measuring your home. Ask what measurements they take.
  5. What equipment is going in, and what is the warranty? Ask for the model numbers and the warranty in writing.
  6. Who gets the building permit? CSLB says the contract should name who gets the necessary permits. Ask who is responsible, and get the answer in the contract.

Signs to Slow Down and Check

These draw on CSLB's consumer guidance.

  • The ad, estimate, or contract shows no license number.
  • The contractor asks for more than the usual home-improvement down-payment limit (10% of the price or $1,000, whichever is less) without a qualifying Blanket Performance and Payment Bond on file with CSLB.
  • One bid comes in far below the others.
  • The person at your door cannot show a license and a photo ID that match.
  • The price, the work, or the payment schedule is not in writing.
  • You cannot find the license when you look it up.

Choosing a Contractor Questions

How do I choose an HVAC contractor in Fresno?
Check the contractor's license on the CSLB website, get at least three written bids for the same work, ask for a certificate of insurance, and read the whole contract before you pay anything. Those steps come from the Contractors State License Board.
How many bids should I get?
The Contractors State License Board recommends at least three written bids, and says to make sure you are comparing bids based on identical plans, specifications, and scope of work.
Is a much lower bid a good sign?
Not necessarily. The Contractors State License Board advises you to beware of any bid that is substantially lower than the others, because a low-bidding contractor may cut corners or do substandard work to make a profit. Compare what each bid includes as well as the total.
How much can a contractor ask for as a down payment?
CSLB generally limits a home-improvement down payment to 10% of the contract price or $1,000, whichever is less. An exception applies if the contractor has a qualifying Blanket Performance and Payment Bond on file with CSLB. Check the contractor's CSLB record before paying a larger deposit.
Can I cancel after I sign?
California law gives you a limited time to cancel some home improvement contracts. Read your contract for the exact notice and deadline.
How do I check a contractor's insurance and bond?
Ask to see a certificate of insurance, and look up the license on the Contractors State License Board site to see the bond and workers' compensation details on file.
Should I ask for a second opinion on a quote?
It is a reasonable step if a quote feels unclear or the number surprises you. Nalk offers a Free 2nd Quote: bring us a quote from another company and we will look it over.
