How Do You Check an HVAC Contractor's License in California?

Look up the license number on the state licensing board's website. It takes a few minutes and tells you whether the license is active and what work it covers.

How to Check a California HVAC License

Search the contractor's license number on the California Contractors State License Board (CSLB) website. The record shows whether the license is active, what work it covers, the contractor's bond and workers' compensation information, and any complaint disclosure.

California law requires every contractor ad to show the contractor's state license number, so you rarely have to hunt for it. Check it before you let anyone start work or take a deposit.

The Lookup, Step by Step

1. Find the number

Look at the contractor's ad, estimate, truck, or contract. A California contractor license number has digits only, no letters.

2. Look it up

Open the CSLB license lookup and enter the number. No number? You can also search by business name or by the owner's name.

3. Read the record

Check that the license is active and that the classification matches the work. Look at the bond, the workers' compensation information, the address of record, and any complaint disclosure.

What the Record Should Tell You

  • Status. The license should be active, not expired or suspended.
  • Classification. Heating and air-conditioning work falls under C-20, Warm-Air Heating, Ventilating and Air-Conditioning Contractor.
  • Bond. The record shows the contractor's bond.
  • Workers' compensation. The record shows the workers' compensation status CSLB has on file.
  • Address of record. A mailing address, such as a PO box, can differ from the shop address. That is common and not a warning sign by itself.
  • Complaint disclosure. CSLB's lookup page includes complaint disclosure information.

Then match the person to the paperwork. When a contractor comes to bid, ask to see a pocket license and a photo ID. You can also call CSLB at (800) 321-CSLB (2752).
