The Problem

The homeowner knew last summer was rough.

Their rooftop unit struggled through the worst of it, running constantly and never quite keeping up when temperatures climbed past 100. It got them through the season, but barely. Rather than wait for it to fail in July when every HVAC company in Fresno is booked out, they made the smart call and reached out in February while there was still time to plan.

The existing unit had been up on that roof for decades. At that age, especially after baking through Central Valley summers year after year, repairs stop making financial sense. The gas line, electrical, and condensation line were all original too. Everything connected to the system was as old as the system itself.

Is Your AC Running Properly?Signs You Might Need a New AC

The Solution

We replaced the entire setup from the roof down. Not just the unit, but everything connected to it.

The old package unit came off and a new Goodman 2-ton high-efficiency package unit went in on a fresh equipment stand. We ran a brand new gas line with stainless-steel flex connector, installed a new electrical disconnect with seal-tight conduit, and replaced the condensation drain line. Every connection between the home and the new unit was rebuilt.

We also sealed the plenum where the unit meets the ductwork and painted all exterior fittings and the plenum with UV-resistant black paint. That last part is specific to rooftop installs out here, and it's one of the details that determines whether your system holds up through summer after summer or starts deteriorating in a couple of years.

Once everything was connected and sealed, we tested the system in both heating and cooling mode before we left the roof.

The Detail That Sets Us Apart

The Central Valley sun is brutal on exposed materials. Sealants crack, flex connectors degrade, and fittings that look fine after installation start breaking down within a few years if they're not protected. Painting the plenum with UV-resistant black paint adds a protective layer that slows that process down significantly.

Most crews bolt the unit on, connect it, and leave. The rooftop environment is an afterthought. For us, it's part of the job. If we're putting a system up on a roof in Fresno, we're building it to handle what Fresno throws at it when summer hits.

The Proof

We tested the system in both heating and cooling modes before we left. On cooling, supply air temperature came in at 61.2°F, which is right where it should be for a properly charged, properly installed system. Heating mode verified and operational. Gas valve adjusted to spec. This homeowner heads into summer with a brand new system already tested and dialed in, not crossing their fingers hoping the old one holds together for one more year.

6 Signs Your HVAC System Might Be Wearing Out

timetoreplace_3

If your bill keeps going up but your usage hasn’t changed, your system might be working harder just to keep up — and wasting energy in the process.

timetoreplace_4

Uneven temperatures are more than annoying. They’re a sign your system isn’t distributing air the way it should.

timetoreplace_1

Most systems start to decline after 10–15 years, especially in Central Valley heat. If it’s older than your teenager, it might be nearing the end.

timetoreplace_5

A stale, musty odor can signal mold, mildew, or clogged drainage in an aging system.

timetoreplace_6

More dust, dry skin, or sneezing? Your HVAC could be recirculating allergens instead of filtering them out.

If you’re always adjusting the thermostat, your system is likely struggling.

If any of these sound familiar, let’s take a look before it turns into a full-on breakdown.
